PRODUCTION TEAM JOB DESCRIPTIONS and INFORMATION
The paragraphs below are brief descriptions of the jobs; for more detailed descriptions, see Mrs. Dixon, Ms. Hurst (Student Music Director), Mrs. Stuart (Student Vocal Director) or Mrs. Last (Student Choreographer and Dance Captains). Scripts are also available for short-term loan.
General Information
All positions:
Student Tech Director
The STD is an assistant to the Director/Producer and Technical Director. S/he works with them to supervise all technical aspects of the production including set construction, set painting, props, lights, sound, costume, makeup and video.
Student Director
The person in this position will assist the Director/Producer as the creative and artistic leader of the production. After discussing the interpretation of the play with the Director/Producer, the Student Director is responsible for directing an agreed upon number of scenes for the production. S/he is will interpret, block and rehearse those scenes as well as assist with any extra rehearsals needed for other scenes in the show.
Assistant Director
The person in this position acts as the “secretary” and “gopher” for the Director/Producer. Jobs are as mundane getting coffee or food and as important as creating the program. It is a catch-all position but very important to the sanity of the Director/Producer
Stage Manager
The Stage Manager is responsible, along with the Director/Producer for supervising the entire production on stage and backstage. The stage manager has important responsibilities in the production including calling all cues during rehearsals and performances. The Stage Manager will have one or two Assistant Stage Managers.
Student Set Designer/Master Carpenter/Scenic Artist
The person in this/these positions, after discussing the interpretation of the play with the Director/Producer, is responsible for designing an agreed upon number of sets for the production (including set props and dressing). Designing a set includes preparing a series of drawings which include all the information necessary for building the set, building a set model and providing the crew with detailed drawings of the set. The Master Carpenter is responsible for working with the Technical Director and supervising the Set Construction Crew in building a safe set. The Set Designer coordinates the colors, tones and shades used on the set and works with other designers (costume, lights) to coordinate colors. The scenic artist is responsible for the painting of the set and drops. The positions of Student Set Designer, Master Carpenter may or may not be held by the same person. Student Lighting Designer/Master Electrician/Light Board Operator
The Student Lighting Designer, after meeting with the Director/Producer and Set Designer, is responsible for designing the lighting for an agreed upon number of scenes for the production (may be all). S/he will also work with the Lighting Crew in compiling an equipment inventory list, creating a lighting plot and hanging, focusing and circuiting the lighting design. The positions of Student Lighting Designer, Master Electrician and Light Board Operator may or may not be held by the same person. You may apply for one or both.
Student Costume Designer/Costume Crew Head
After meeting with the Director/Producer and the other designers for the production, the person with this position is responsible for designing an agreed upon number of costumes for the production. Designing costumes includes preparing detailed renderings with all information necessary for creating the assigned costumes. S/he will also assist the Costume Coordinator and supervising the Costume Crew in identifying, building, buying, renting, caring for and returning all costumes and costume accessories needed by the actors in the production. The positions of Student Costume Designer and Costume Crew Head may or may not be held by the same person. You may apply for one or both.
Props Master
After meeting with Producer/Director, Technical Director and Set Designer, the Props Master is responsible for identifying all set furniture, set dressings and props needed for the production. S/he will supervise the crew in locating, building, buying, renting, caring for and returning props. Props include set furniture, set dressings, trim props, set props, hand props, personal props and greenery.
The Student Sound Designer/Sound Board Operator
The Student Sound Designer, after meeting with the Director/Producer and Set Designer, is responsible for designing the sound cues for an agreed upon number of scenes for the production (may be all). Designing sound will include identifying, locating and taping or producing live the sounds needed for the assigned scenes. In a musical it will also involve working with the Technical Director and one of the ASMs to coordinate use of the body mics and schedule mic sound checks with actors. The positions of Student Sound Designer and Sound Board Operator may or may not be held by the same person. You may apply for one or both.
Makeup Designer/Crew Head
After meeting with the Director/Producer (and in some cases the Hair Designer and Costume Designer), the person in this position is responsible for designing makeup for an agreed upon number of actors for the production (may be all). S/he will also supervise the Makeup Crew in inventorying and ordering/purchasing makeup for the actors and assisting them in applying their character makeup when necessary. Depending on the demands of the show, makeup, hair styling and wigs may be handled by one crew.
Hair/Wig Crew Head
After meeting with the Director/Producer and Hair/Wig Designer (and in some cases the Makeup Designer and Costume Designer), the person in this position will supervise the Hair/Wig Crew in researching, identifying and ordering/purchasing all of the supplies needed for the production. S/he will work with the Makeup Crew Head to create a call time schedule for the actors. Depending on the demands of the show, makeup, hair styling and wigs may be handled by one crew.
